Spring in Wanaka

Spring in Wanaka

Spring is in the air so it’s time to make the most of the longer days.

It goes without saying that Spring equals the start of the outdoor climbing season. Head to crags that are too hot in the height of summer, such as the Cattle Yard (check out Gorillas in the Schist, 3-star 18) or Sunnyside for lots of short but sweet climbs. If you don’t know where to start then Basecamp Rock Adventures offers half-day trips from $179 or pop into Basecamp Wanaka Climbing Centre to pick up a guidebook or some new gear from Climbing Shop.

After a morning at TC, head to Hospital Flat for your afternoon climbing fix

There’s also still plenty of fun to be had on the slopes.  Warmer days make for forgiving and fun conditions, so head up to Cardrona or Treble Cone and enjoy the spring corn. One of our favourite things to do is ski TC in the morning, and then hit the crags at Hospital Flat in the afternoon – perfect!

September and October are prime months for ski-touring, particularly with more daylight hours to play with.  If you don’t have the skills already then Adventure Consultants and Aspiring Guides offer a range of courses for you to skill-up.

We also love getting on the bike at this time of year. Grab a trail map from Outside Sports (who can hire you a bike too) and explore the trails of Sticky Forest, or Wanaka Bike Guides have a range of trips to suit all abilities.

Watch the sun go down over Lake Wanaka – a perfect end to a Spring day

End a perfect spring day with a lakeside barbeque. There are several public BBQ sites around the lakefront which are perfect spots to watch the sun go down. Just remember to be a tidy Kiwi and clean up after yourself.
